Windsor set for royal wedding Posted On 04 April 2018

The wedding of Prince Henry Charles Albert David Windsor and Rachel Meghan Markle will take place on 19th of May 2018 at St George’s Chapel Windsor. But how did the story of two vastly different individuals develop into a romance that has now gripped the world?

The couple apparently met in 2016 at the Invictus Games, a charity established by Prince Harry to support injured service men and women. By October 2017 things had moved on at some pace and Meghan was invited for tea with the Queen. The following month Meghan was reported to have left her role as Rachel Zane, in the American comedy drama, Suits. With speculation rising, the official announcement of their engagement was made by Kensington Palace.

According to the Telegraph, Harry proposed whilst cooking a chicken dinner at his home. The official engagement photographs were taken in the more romantic setting of Frogmore House, Windsor and, although the press were eager to snap the happy couple, the main focus was trying to see and be the first to photograph the engagement ring. This ring has recently been voted one of the best royal engagement rings, consisting of two round diamonds from Princess Diana’s private collection and a stone from Botswana, mounted in white gold with a yellow gold band – with an estimated value of £50,000.

The ceremony will be conducted in front of 800 specially invited family and friends by the Dean of Windsor, with the Archbishop of Canterbury officiating the vows. Details of who has received an invitation are closely guarded, although it is widely thought that Harry will be inviting several people from the charities he supports and Meghan will be inviting a number of celebrity friends. There is also speculation that Elton John, a favourite of Harry’s mother, will be performing.

What about the flowers? It’s known that Meghan’s favourites are roses and peonies, so it is expected these will feature, as will a sprig of Myrtle. This has been a traditional inclusion in all royal bouquets since 1840 at the wedding of Queen Victoria and is supposed to represent luck and fidelity in a marriage.

As with all royal weddings, most of the details are heavily guarded until the day but it has been revealed that the cake will be made by Claire Ptak from the London based bakery Violet Cakes and will be a lemon and elderflower sponge decorated with spring flowers.

The reception will be held at St Georges Hall and will be catered by Table Talk who also catered the reception for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Harry and Meghan have decided to put their own stamp on the food and it is thought there will be an American touch. There will of course be entertainment at the evening event, and rumours are rife that this could include Ed Sheeran, the Spice girls and possibly even the Foo Fighters.

Although we may speculate on guests, flowers, cake and the reception the thing that will attract the most attention is the wedding dress. Nothing has yet been confirmed publicly, but it is widely rumoured that Meghan will be choosing a British designer; the favourite being Ralph and Russo who also designed her engagement dress. Other designers in the frame are Emilia Wickstead, Erdem, Misha Nonoo and an American option in Oscar de la Renta.

Whatever the events of the day bring, there is no doubt that many will be glued to the television or waiting outside the venues for a glimpse of the happy couple.
